Macheso whips wife with belt

WHILE Alick Macheso is grabbing headlines for his music, another Macheso from Dzivaresekwa Extension is grabbing headlines for turning his wife into a punching bag. The wanna-be Mike Tyson, David Macheso, 36, will perform 210 hours of unpaid work for whipping his wife with a belt and chasing her away from his house to accommodate a "small-house".
Macheso was initially slapped with a nine-month jail term by Harare magistrate Kudakwashe Jarabini. Meanwhile, three months were set aside on condition that he does not physically or emotionally abuse his wife Silvia Nxumalo, 26, in the next five years. On the remaining six months, Macheso will perform 210 hours of community service at Dzivarasekwa Police Station during weekends. At Harare magistrates' court, Macheso faced two counts of contravening the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5; 16.
He came clean and pleaded guilty. Agreed facts are that on May last year, Macheso brought a girl friend to the house that he shares with his wife. The wife was incensed about this blatant parading of her rival and a bitter war of words ensued. David Macheso belligerently announced that he wanted to marry another wife but Silvia challenged this fantasy. Incensed that his wife was questioning his decision Macheso removed his belt and thrashed Slvia viciously.
Prosecutor Auxilia Mangwaira had it that Silvia was heavily pregnant and she sustained head injuries from the attack. As if that was not enough, Macheso teamed up with his girlfriend to insult Silvia and her children. However, Silvia failed to make a police report.
On April 16, she went to Macheso's workplace asking for money to buy food and clothes for the three children. But the unrepentant Macheso beat her savagely once more. Silvia could not stomach the abuse any more and she lodged a complaint with the police leading to Macheso's arrest.
