AN unrepentant Masvingo man facing rape charges reportedly escaped from lawful custody under the nose of the police before he tracked-down his victim whom he fatally struck with a log.

He later fled to South Africa.

Victor Mukwaturi (28) of Mutenda village under Chief Shumba escaped from Muchakata Police Station and went to look for Nyembesi Gavhure (18), who also stayed in the same village. He found her and force-marched her to a nearby mountain where he allegedly killed her before fleeing to South Africa in December 2008.

Mukwaturi had been arrested for allegedly raping Gavhure and was detained at the police station. He, however, escaped and allegedly went on to murder his victim.

Mukwaturi was arrested last week at the Beitbridge Border Post.

He has since been arraigned before a Masvingo magistrate court facing rape and murder charges.

Mukwaturi was not formally charged when he appeared before Mr Stanford Mambanje last Thursday.

Mr Mambanje remanded Mukwaturi in custody to April 26 this year for trial. The court advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Charges against Mukwaturi arose on December 22 2008, when police arrested him for allegedly raping Gavhure. He was taken to Muchakata police station holding cells pending his appearance in court. Mukwaturi allegedly escaped from the holding cells by jumping through the fence and went to the complainant's homestead.

He allegedly dragged the woman to the nearby Chazive Mountains where he murdered her using a log.

Mukwaturi's luck, however, ran out after he was arrested last week at Beitbridge Border Post while trying to illegally cross into the country. Mr Frank Chirairo appeared for the State.
