TWO armed robbers who unleashed a reign of terror on Chitungwiza residents and broke into their homes, robbing and raping women, have been thrown behind bars for 55 years.

The duo will serve an effective 30 years after Chitungwiza regional magistrate Ms Gladys Pise suspended 25 years for each on condition of good behaviour.

The pair went on a robbing spree, waylaying some of their victims along footpaths, raping and robbing them of their valuables worth more than US$5 000.

Emmanuel Hlasera (29) of no fixed abode and his accomplice Victor Nyazana (30) of 1549 Unit A denied 18 counts, including nine of rape, seven of robbery and two of unlawful entry. Ms Pise jailed the duo for 55 years each before suspending a portion of the sentence.

In sentencing them, Mr Pise noted that the pair's ruthless behaviour was uncalled for and that only prison was suitable for them.

Appearing for the State, Ms Joice Fusire proved that from August 28 2011 to October in the same year, the pair broke into three houses armed with a machete and iron bars where they would demand cash, groceries, assaulting their victims and raping them.

They raped and assaulted nine women and girls whose ages range from 11 to 80 years.

The duo started their voyage by intercepting two juveniles, a boy and a girl, walking near Chitungwiza industrial area going home.

They demanded their cellphones, assaulted them and raped the girl.

On another day, they intercepted three other girls on their way home from a church service and waylaid them in the bush where they raped them.

Ms Fusire proved that the merciless gang also raped another woman at a shrine while she was praying with her husband.

They also broke into a house belonging to an 80-year-old woman where they demanded cash, raped her 52-year-old daughter and fractured her leg.

However, the duo was later arrested by Detective Langton Chogwiza and Master Sango after calling someone using a stolen cellphone with a tracker.
