A daring cop stole three marked police cars and even had the audacity to drive one of the vehicles into Morris Depot to commit another offence. Misheck Madzivadondo was yesterday sentenced to an effective four years in jail for theft.

Regional magistrate Fadzai Mthombeni had initially sentenced Madzivadondo to six years in jail but suspended two years on condition of good behaviour. The court heard that Madzivadondo stole two cars from Highfield Police Camp and stole the third from Morris Depot.

Facts are that on December 11 last year, John Dick parked his service vehicle, a Nissan Sunny registration number ZRP 171F at his house in Highfield Police New Camp. Madzivadondo, the court heard, went to the police camp around 4am and proceeded to Dick's house.

Using movie style methods, he used an unknown object to open the car and used a screwdriver to hotwire the engine before driving away. It is the state's case that after one week, Madzivadondo went to Morris Depot driving Dick's vehicle intending to steal another. An alert officer raised alarm, prompting Madzivadondo to abandon the car and take to his heels.

On December 31, Madzivadondo, went back to Morris Depot and stole Learnmore Bere's Mitsubishi Canter truck registration number ZRP 210E. Bere is the officer-in-charge at the radio workshops at Morris Depot.

Madzivadondo broke the window and hot-wired the engine and drove away. The vehicle was later recovered at Mbare Musika with a missing battery and canopy.

On January 12 this year, Madzivadondo proceeded to Highfield Police New Camp at 4am where he stole Kudakwashe Jasi's service vehicle, a Mazda B1600. Using the Mazda B1600, Madzivadondo drove to Manyewe Business Centre in Mamina where he introduced himself as an official from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission.

His luck however ran out when he was arrested while refuelling the stolen car.
