Mugabe meets new envoys

The new Russian ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Sergey Bakharov says he is keen to see economic ties between Zimbabwe and his country soar to greater heights to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
Mr Bakharov expressed these sentiments when he presented his letters of credence to President Robert Mugabe at State House in Harare this Thursday.
Although ties between Zimbabwe and Russia were forged long back when Russia supported Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, trade relations between the two sides have remained weak and lagging behind.
Mr Bakharov said he will work towards their widening and growth.
At present, Russian companies have entered into partnerships and joint ventures in a small way in the exploitation of gold in Penhalonga and chrome in Darwendale, while other Russian business people are still trying to hammer out some deals.
On the international arena, Russia played a crucial role in blocking United Nations sanctions against Zimbabwe at the instigation of Britain and its western allies.
