A Harare commuter omnibus driver, who is facing attempted murder charges after running over a policeman, was last week denied bail as a magistrate labelled him a flight risk.
Mbare Magistrate Reuben Mukavhi ruled that Richard Chizhanje (41) of Budiriro 5, who is being charged of contravening the Road Traffic Act Chapter 13:11, does not qualify for bail since he tried to flee after knocking down a police officer sometime in May.
Chizhanje was ordered to remain in custody until his trial commences on July 4.
Prosecutor William Kamupira alleged that sometime in May, Chizhanje ignored a police officer's order to stop at a road block and went on to knock him down.
The court heard that Chizhanje did not stop to check on the safety of the victim as required by law but instead proceeded to drive with the police officer still stuck under the vehicle.
On witnessing the incident a well-wisher is said to have gave chase, forcing Chizhanje to abandon his Toyota Hiace and take to his heels.
Members of the public gave chase and apprehended the commuter omnibus driver.
The police officer suffered broken ribs and is receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.
