A 23-year-old secondary school pupil from Gutu in Masvingo was slapped with an effective 13-year imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping an eight-year-old Grade Two pupil he had stalked while coming from school.
Trust Shumbayarerwa of Taurai Village under Chief Munyaradzi pleaded not guilty to a charge of rape when he appeared before
Masvingo regional magistrate Mrs Esther Muremba last Friday.
He was, however, convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
Shumbayarerwa was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison after which two years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
For the State, Ms Moreblessing Rusere said on 31 January at around 1pm Shuyarerwa stalked a primary school pupil.
The court heard that Shumbayarerwa emerged from his hideout where he was lying in ambush. He grabbed his victim from behind and dragged her into the bush while muffling her mouth using his hands.
Shumbayarerwa then raped the girl once and ordered her not to tell anyone or risk being beaten.
After committing the crime, Shumbayarerwa disappeared into the bush leaving the girl alone.
The girl went home but did not tell anyone what had happened to her until during the night when the mother realised her daughter was in excruciating pain.
When she asked her, the girl told the mother that she needed cold water to pour on her private parts but was reluctant to tell what had actually transpired, the court heard.
When the mother insisted, the girl revealed that she had been raped by Shumbayarerwa, a pupil at a local secondary school.
A report was then made to the police leading to Shumbayarerwa's arrest. The girl was examined by a doctor and the medical report was available in court as exhibit.
