THE wife of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander, General Constantine Chiwenga, Mary Mubaiwa-Chiwenga, last week urged female soldiers and wives of army personnel to rally behind President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF in the forthcoming elections, as they were "chosen by God".

Mubaiwa-Chiwenga, who is on a countrywide tour of army barracks, last Thursday morning addressed female soldiers and wives of army personnel at Mbalabala School of Infantry in Esigodini, before moving to One Brigade Headquarters in Bulawayo in the afternoon. On Friday morning the general's wife took her campaign to Imbizo Barracks that coincided with the launch of Musha Mukadzi Zimbabwe Armed Forces Foundation, whose patron is First Lady Grace Mugabe.

In her speech that was read at the three army camps, Mubaiwa-Chiwenga said she was aware of the sacrifices made by the country's forefathers to gain independence.

"Let us not take our freedom for granted, let us not sell our country for the love of working for whites, and let us not sell our country for the love of people who do not love us," she said.

"We have been on sanctions for many years now, the sanctions were invited by people who claim to love us and want to rule our country.

"When they invited sanctions, they knew what they were doing."

Mubaiwa-Chiwenga's message to the army resonates with that of her husband, who has openly backed Mugabe, much to the chagrin of the President's political opponents. She accused unnamed people of plotting the fall of the country, urging the wives of the servicemen and female soldiers not to vote for them, but for Mugabe.

"How does one person and lots of advisers facilitate for the demise of their country? How does a person facilitate for our dear Zimbabwe to be left on its knees?" she asked rhetorically. "Let us not be perpetual beggars."

Mubaiwa-Chiwenga told the women to vote for "the revolution".

"Please think about it, let's vote for our revolution, let's vote for a man who has people at heart, a man who has fought for our rights, for our freedom, a man who fought effortlessly (sic) for all of us to be educated," she said.

"President Comrade RG Mugabe is one man, one leader who was chosen by God, one leader who was selected by the people of this nation and not elected. Let us vote for Zanu PF and remain with one government, let us not be swayed by things that come at night because tomorrow they won't be there."

Mubaiwa-Chiwenga urged the women to "fight the enemy within".

"Let us unite and fight the enemy within," she said. "I urge all of you to register and vote correctly and by correctly I mean RG Mugabe."

Mubaiwa-Chiwenga at the end of her address paid tribute to her husband, "for affording us the opportunity to spread our messages across our brigades".

"I feel humbled by this honour, an honour that has been bestowed upon us by a man who cares so much for the well-being of other women besides that of his wife," she said.
