Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and the Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Mr Giles Mutseyekwa boycotted the launch of the National Housing policy which was held today and officiated by President Robert Mugabe.

Mugabe called for the private and public sectors to come together and consider self-contained human settlements at the periphery of urban centres as a means of decongesting cities.

He said it is worrying that new housing schemes sprawling around towns and cities lack basic social amenities, adding that responsible authorities should address such challenges.

"It is disheartening to note that new housing schemes that are sprawling around towns and cities lack basic social amenities such as schools and clinics. Responsible authorities need to immediately address the attendant challenges of this short-sighted development modes," said Mugabe.

The President commended diamond mining companies operating in Marange for heeding the government policy in providing accommodation to villagers who were moved from the Marange mining area, saying other employers and companies should consider assisting employees to acquire decent accommodation.

The National Housing Policy seeks to address challenges facing housing developers in the country and to widen the housing implementation base by taking on board other players such as multi-national companies, community-based organisations and employers.

Tsvangirai and Mutseyekwa were was expected to address the gathering but did not attend the launch.
