A 21-year-old Harare woman who travelled all the way to Zengeza in Chitungwiza to dump her newly born baby was yesterday sentenced to one-and-a-half years in prison.
Margret Ngwarai of Block 2 Nyerere Flats, Mbare in Harare, admitted to charges of baby dumping when she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo. Mr Murendo
slapped her with a three-year jail term, but set aside one-and-a-half years on condition of good behaviour.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa said that on June 3 and at around 8.45pm Ngwarai boarded a commuter omnibus from Mbare to Zengeza in Chitungwiza with the child.
She dropped along Mukomberanwa Drive opposite Zengeza 1 High School where she dumped the child close to a church. The court heard that Learnmore Maunganidze of Zengeza 5 walked along the same road around 9pm and was attracted by cries from the baby.
She picked up the baby and made a report to the police.
