Dr Simba Makoni leader of the Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn party has today announced that he will not stand as a presidential candidate in next month's harmonised election just a day before the nomination court sits.

Announcing the decision during a press conference in Harare, the 2008 presidential aspirant said the decision was made by the party's national executive on Monday this week.

"We have taken the decision to pave the way for a single candidate with the parties we have been working with recently," he said.

"I can confirm that consultations are ongoing with the other parties."

Dr Makoni said he is Mavambo's preferred candidate in the event of coalition with the other parties.

Mavambo has been working along with the two MDCs along with Zapu and Zanu Ndonga in order to push through an illegal delay of the elections which President Mugabe lawfully proclaimed to be held on July 31.

He however said his party will field candidates for all the other legislative seats who will contest against candidates from parties who they seek to form a coalition with.

According to the Electoral Act all aspiring presidential candidates are expected to have file their nomination papers at the nomination court tomorrow and the parties that Mavambo is seeking to form a coalition with are expected to field candidates.

The Professor Welshman Ncube led MDC is on record saying they are not interested in forming a coalition.
