The Minister of Media, Information and Publicity, Webster Shamu, says the digitalisation programme by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation and Transmedia as well as installation of transmitters by the signal carriers will enable the entry of more players into the broadcasting industry.
Shamu however said this can be achieved if funds are availed to such programmes.
Speaking during the commissioning of community radio transmitters in Harare on Friday, Minister Shamu said ZBC's and Transmedia Corporation's digitalisation and transmitter installation programmes in marginalised areas is a giant step towards the opening of airwaves to more players.
He however noted that more players can enter the industry if the budget gives priority to the programmes.
He said that currently the budget under the GPA does not reflect the importance of the digitalisation programme.
The current ZBC broadcasting system is analogue. However, SADC has set a deadline of 2013 for regional broadcasters to migrate to digital broadcasting systems.
Digital systems can accommodate up to 20 channels in one frequency compared to analogue system which allows for one station for one frequency.
