OUTGOING Gweru Mayor Mr Tedious Chimombe has received a golden handshake from the city council in the form of a Toyota Prado and a residential stand in Athlone low density suburb.

Mr Chimombe also received two months allowance for every year that he served as mayor.

According to sources, Mr Chimombe received the exit package during a farewell party, which coincided with the last full council meeting in the council chambers on Saturday afternoon.

"I want to believe Mr Chimombe is a happy man after he became one of the few ceremonial mayors to receive such a handsome exit package from the council. This used to be the preserve of executive mayors. Surely, the gods are smiling on Mr Chimombe," said the source.

During his term of office, Mr Chimombe also received a big residential stand in Mkoba Village 12.

Mr Chimombe, who is now contesting the Gweru Urban constituency as an independent candidate in the harmonised elections yesterday confirmed receiving the golden handshake.

"I received the Toyota Prado which I was using when I was Mayor, a residential stand and two months allowance for the number of years I have been in office. The exit package was agreed at a full council meeting and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development approved the exit package," said Mr Chimombe.

He said he was happy to be rewarded in such a way after  working very well with council management.

"I want to believe we are one of the few councils which worked very hard to try and improve service delivery. I want to thank the management of Gweru City Council and fellow councillors for approving my exit package," he said.

Mr Chimombe said there were a few councillors who tried to block his exit package but they were out-voted.

He said the full council meeting immediately adopted the resolution to award him his package.
