South Africa-based Zimbabwean businessman, Mutumwa Mawere, who failed to submit nomination papers on the 28th of June, has filed an application to the Constitutional Court seeking the extension of the nomination process.
Mawere wanted to file his application to contest as president in the forthcoming general elections and argues that he failed to file his nomination papers on time as he was still sorting out his citizenship status.
Mawere said by the time he accessed the relevant documents, the nomination process had been closed.
In his application, Mawere cited the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) as the first respondent, while the Registrar General and the President were cited as the second and third respondent.
The Attorney General was cited as the 4th respondent.
Mawere is seeking the court to order the ZEC and the Registrar General to constitute a special nomination court before the 12th of July to consider his nomination papers and others who might have faced similar circumstances.
He also wants the President to issue a proclamation to enable him to file his nomination papers.
