President Mugabe yesterday came face-to-face with his irate Zanu-PF supporters who besieged the party headquarters demanding audience with him over alleged imposition of a parliamentary candidate in Harare-South constituency.
The demonstrators, who picketed Zanu-PF headquarters demanding to be addressed by Mugabe, who was set to attend the party's politburo meeting in the afternoon, also threatened a protest vote if their concerns were not addressed.
Party political commissar Webster Shamu tried for almost 30 minutes in the morning to persuade the bitter apparatchiks to disperse, but failed as they demanded nullification of primary election results which declared Shadreck Mashayamombe the winner.
When Mugabe arrived eight hours later for the politburo meeting, the demonstrators demanded war veteran Tonderai Nkomo be allowed to represent the party in the constituency.
