The Association of Rural District Council says the partnership between the association and the private sector in the acquisition of road construction equipment has helped in the purchasing of many graders for 10 Rural District Councils (RDCs).

Under the deal, the RDCs pay a deposit which is 50 percent of the total cost of the equipment then the balance is paid after an agreed period.

After realising that government was failing to disburse the $50 million for the RDCs to purchase road construction equipment, the Association of Rural District Councils entered into an agreement with various firms which has seen many RDCs benefiting.

The associations' secretary general, Mr Rodgers Mozhenty said the programme has assisted in the construction and maintenance of roads in some rural areas.

The RDCs also made an agreement with Zimbabwe National Road Authority, (ZINARA) for the purchase of 20 graders for distribution to RDCs every year instead of being given cash for road maintenance programmes.

The government has made the development of road infrastructure one of its major priorities and President Robert Mugabe recently commissioned $16 million worth of road equipment sourced by ZINARA.
