FOUR people, including the driver, were burnt beyond recognition when a Nissan Pulsar they were travelling in was involved in an accident with a haulage truck and caught fire along the Harare-Beitbridge highway near Mvuma yesterday morning.

This brings to 22 the number of people who died in road accidents between last Thursday and yesterday after 12 others were killed while nine others were seriously injured in two separate accidents which occurred almost at the same spot along Gweru-Mvuma Road on Saturday and Sunday.

Acting National Traffic spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the death of people in yesterday's accident which he said occurred near the 183km peg along the highway at around 8am.

He said four people were burnt beyond recognition while one passenger who was in the small vehicle escaped with minor injuries and was treated and discharged at Mvuma Hospital.

The remains of the four, he said, were taken to Mvuma Hospital mortuary.

"The Nissan Pulsar encroached into the lane of the South African registered haulage truck and hit the right rear wheel of the trailer," he said.

Asst Insp Chakanza said the vehicle collided with the haulage truck, veered off the road and caught fire. He urged motorists to exercise caution when travelling on the country's major roads.
