Zimbabwe cop demands $70 and two goats for a bribe

A POLICEMAN in Kadoma has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe of US$70 and two goats for the release of a suspect whom he had apprehended for growing marijuana in his maize field.
Innocent Mapfumo (33) was not asked to plead to bribery charges when he appeared before Kadoma magistrate Mr Remigious Jemwa last week. He was remanded out of custody to Wednesday this week on US$30 bail.
Prosecutor Mr Reginald Chavora told the court that in December last year, Wilfred Madzimbamuto of Plot 14 Tilverton Farm in Chegutu engaged Patrick Zinanzva to cultivate his maize field.
Madzimbamuto allegedly told Zinanzva to avoid weeding out 300 marijuana plants that were also in the field.
It is understood Zinanzva reported this to Mapfumo, leading to Madzimbamuto's arrest.
The police officer, it is alleged, subsequently demanded US$70 and two goats for him to destroy the plants.
It was still unclear last week how the matter came to light. Madzimbamuto also appeared before Mr Jemwa facing charges of unlawfully dealing in dangerous drugs.
