A 25-year-old man was burnt to death while another sustained serious injuries after a plastic shack they were sleeping in caught fire in Hatcliffe Extension, Harare, on Tuesday morning.

Police said the fire was caused by a candle that was left burning by the two men the previous night while they were drinking opaque beer in the shack before they slept.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the incident. He said the deceased was identified as China Mutokwa and his friend Simbini Zandai Mhlanga who resided in the shack.

"The two were last seen on Monday at around 10pm drinking opaque beer in the shack," said Insp Chibanda.

It is believed that the following day at around 6am, the blankets and the shack caught fire killing Mutokwa on the spot while Mhlanga was seriously burnt. A passer-by saw the fire and alerted other people who were nearby.

Mhlanga was taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for treatment while Mutokwa's body was taken to the hospital's mortuary.  Police and forensic experts attended the scene.
