A 21-year-old man from Chiredzi in Masvingo has been jailed for an effective 20 years after being found guilty of raping his brother's two children.
The man pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape when he appeared before Masvingo regional magistrate Mrs Esther Muremba on Tuesday. However, he was sentenced to 26 years in jail, 10 on the first, eight each for the second and third due to overwhelming evidence.
Six years were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
For the State, Ms Moreblessing Rusere said on an unknown date and month but sometime in 2011, the man employed by Chiredzi Rural District Council was sleeping on one side and his two victims aged eight and ten years, on the other side in the room they shared. The girls are doing Grade Three and Five at a primary school in Chiredzi.
The man, who stayed at his brother's house sneaked into the girls' blankets at around midnight. He moved closer where the eight-year-old was sleeping and also got into a sleeping position. He then lifted the girl's skirt to the waist level and raped her once.
He used the same method and repeatedly raped his victim until this year. The matter came to light when the girl told her 10-year-old sister who then told her maternal aunt.
In the second and the third count in 2012 during the first schools term, the man who was sleeping in the same room with the two girls used the same method and raped the elder sister once.
The court heard that the man ordered the 10-year-old girl not to tell anyone and she complied. Two days later from the first encounter, the man again raped the girl once.
The matter came to light when the girl told her female teacher who reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
