The Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) says there is need to expand the Harare International Airport as it will in the immediate future host increased traffic.

With several airlines now plying the Harare route and many others expected to come, CAAZ managing director David Chawota said $400 million is required for the expansion of the Harare International Airport under a 10-year plan.

He said CAAZ is currently working on raising $50 million for the refurbishment of the airport and the replacement of obsolete equipment.

"We want to expand Harare International Airport for it to cope with the expected increase in domestic and international flights.

"We require about $400 million for the expansion of the airport and the project is expected to be completed in 10 years to come," said Mr Chawota.

CAAZ board member Thandiwe Mlobane said the coming of more airlines will reduce problems of connectivity which she said cause inconveniences to passengers.

Mlobane said: "It is disturbing to note that airlines inconvenience passengers due to poor connectivity and four hour distance will be completed in almost three days."

The hosting of Routes Africa 2014 by Zimbabwe has been described as a significant event which will improve economic performance.

Hosting the event next year will also allow the Routes Africa participants to monitor the expansion and progress at the Victoria Falls airport.

Expansion of the Victoria Falls airport is expected to be complete by 2015.
