The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Thursday held a meeting with the African Union Long-Term Observer Mission team at the police general headquarters in Harare.

In a statement, ZRP National Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said during the meeting, the team led by Dr Chirambo Kandwani was furnished with information on what is happening on the ground.

The team was among many other issues informed that the political environment is generally peaceful, serve for isolated cases of intra-political violence which were recorded during primary elections of parties.

The police also informed the team that there are few cases of inter-party political violence and minor infringements being received such as tearing of political posters.

The observer mission team was also told that the security sector reforms being called for by the MDC formations are not necessary since the organisation has been reforming itself and improving through the injection of new blood since independence.

The team was also told that if the MDC formations want to change the top brass of the country's security, they should first win the elections then appoint the top brass of their choice.

The ZRP stated that they are fully prepared to maintain law and order during the forthcoming elections, saying the police force will arrest all perpetrators of violence, regardless of their political affiliation and status in society.
