A Harare man is battling for his life at Parirenyatwa Hospital after he was struck several times with a machete by a three-man gang that wanted to rob him of his money and cellphones in Glen Norah recently.
One of the suspected robbers, Brian Makawa (27), last week appeared at the Mbare Magistrates' Court charged with attempted murder and was remanded in custody to the 23rd of this month.
In remanding Makawa in custody, magistrate Mr Reuben Mukavhi labelled the accused a flight risk highlighting that two of his accomplices are still are still at large.
It is the State's case that some time last month, the complainant was sitting in his car along Zvimba Road in Glen Norah when Makawa and his accomplices kidnapped him and took him to a secluded place along the same road.
The trio is said to have demanded money and other valuables such as cellphones and jewellery.
Upon realising that their victim had nothing of value on him, Makawa and his gang are said to have started assaulting him with a machete.
Prosecutor William Kamupira told the court that during the course of the attack, the victim, whose name cannot be published due to ongoing police investigations, managed to recognise Makawa and called him by name.
This is said to have led the group into intensifying their attacks with the intention of killing him.
After several minutes of incessant attacks, the gang is said to have thought that the victim had died and disappeared from the scene.
However, a passer-by later found the victim lying in a pool of blood and gasping for breath.
A police report was made, leading to Makawa's arrest.
