A Johanne Marange Apostolic Church elder from Angola, Mr Elis Joao Francisco Miguel, who also attended the annual Passover gathering, said President Mugabe was an African icon respected throughout the continent.

"Even in Angola, when you come to visit us, we see you as more than our leader. You are our President and we will always hold you in high esteem," he said.

Mr Miguel added that the church has an obligation to protect its leaders.

"We have a huge responsibility on our hands and that is to protect our leaders. You (President Mugabe) are a shining example of leadership and the people of Zimbabwe are blessed to have you. We will protect you through our prayers and we also want you to win the elections and continue with your great leadership."

A church elder from Mozambique, Mr Liazano Framuaio, disclosed that the church was praying for President Mugabe to win the elections.

"Mr President, we are praying for you to win the elections and we are confident that you will do it. We are firmly behind you because you are our leader and as a church, we cannot go against our leader.

"You were given to us by God and we will always be behind you. We know that it is not a coincidence that you are just friends with our leader (Noah Taguta) because you are two messengers who have a common mission to better the lives of your people."
