THREE suspected South African-based armed robbers who were part of a gang that had been terrorising residents were shot and killed while another one was injured by police in Harare in separate incidents last Thursday.
One of the robbers was shot in Southerton while the other two were shot in Eastlea. Two other suspected armed robbers have since been arrested and are assisting police with investigations.
Police have since identified one of the killed robbers as Tinashe Faku, brother to notorious armed robber Tendai Faku.
Police sources yesterday said the Faku brothers were behind a spate of armed robbers in and around the city.
It is alleged that they were targeting various houses they believed had large amounts of money. After raiding the houses, the robbers would fly back to South Africa where they were based.
Last Thursday, police received information that Tinashe was in the country. They came across an Audi vehicle that he was driving while in the company of his accomplice in Eastlea. He was ordered to stop but sped off. Police fired warning shots and he did not stop his vehicle.
Tinashe was shot and he died on the spot while his unnamed accomplice later died after being admitted at a local hospital.
Investigations revealed that Tinashe was operating a clothing shop in the city centre and it is believed that he opened it using the proceeds from his criminal activities. Another unnamed suspected armed robber was shot and killed by police in Southerton while his other accomplice was shot in the leg after he attempted to flee from the police. Two other suspects who were in the same get away car were also arrested.
Police picked up information that the four were behind some of the criminals activities in and around the city and they tailed their get away car until they caught up with them. The other three suspects are still assisting police with investigations.
Police recently shot and killed two armed robbers who had committed a spate of robberies in Harare and Bulawayo between May and June. The pair, Golden Magwenju (24) and Joseph Makanuka (20), were killed in a shoot-out with police. Police said the two committed 11 counts of armed robbery. On June 16, 2013 they robbed a Roman Catholic priest and got away with three laptops, a Nokia X2 cell phone, and US$18 700. On June 17, the two, with their accomplices, robbed a man of his vehicle and cash after disarming and robbing security guards who were guarding the premises.
They also robbed them of a pepper spray can, stun gun and electric shock, and the security guard's bullet-proof jacket.
On June 19 at 8.30pm, the accused, after gaining entry into a Mt Pleasant house through an unlocked kitchen door, used pistols to rob the occupants of US$2 000, Samsung Galaxy cell phones, I-phone 4s and Nokia C7.
