STEALING $118 000 from the Central African Building Society earned a Chipinge bank teller a five-year jail term last Thursday.

Remember Maboko (27) of Maunganidze, Chief Mutema's area was convicted of the offence he committed in 2011 by Chipinge magistrate, Mr Clemence Ngweshiwa.

He had pleaded guilty to the offence.

He will serve an effective 18 months behind bars as six months were set aside on condition of good behaviour, while the remaining 36 were suspended on condition that he restitutes CABS the $118 760 he stole.

Appearing for the State, Mr Brian Madzura, said on November 1, 2011, Maboko who was employed by CABS Chipinge Branch as a relief bank teller stole $118 760 from his employer.

"On the day in question at around 4pm, Maboko stole a key from a workmate, Catherine Makita who had gone out of the office. He used the key to open a safe and stole $100 000. He locked the safe again," said Mr Madzura.

Mr Madzura said Maboko also stole $18 760 from the safe he was in charge of and stashed the money into his satchel. He went home with the money when the bank closed for the day.

The following day Makita discovered that she had lost the key for her safe and decided to wait for Maboko's arrival as he had a spare key.

"Maboko did not show up, raising suspicions among employees. They decided to dismantle the safe and discovered the theft.

"A police report was made. Investigations led to Maboko's arrest months later," said Mr Madzura.
On being asked why he committed the offence, Maboko shocked the court by saying he wanted to prevent an armed robbery that his uncle was threatening to mastermind if he had not stolen the money.

"My uncle told me to steal the money. He said failure to do so would have resulted in him robbing the bank. I subsequently stole the money and gave it to him as I feared for the lives of my workmates in the event of an armed robbery," said Maboko.

However, the court would not have any of his excuses and sentenced him to serve five years behind bars.
