IN a fresh case of political violence, Chief Dobola of Binga District in Matabeleland North, was injured when he was allegedly attacked by two MDC-T youths who ambushed him at a bus stop.
The incident happened on Wednesday. After the attack, Chief Dobola (39), was taken to Binga District Hospital where he was treated and discharged yesterday [Thursday].
Chief Dobola told the state media that: "the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in Makunku Village after I had dropped off a commuter omnibus from Saba. I was on my way to Dobola and I was preparing for my birthday party that will be held tomorrow (today)."
"I was carrying some luggage and soon after dropping off the commuter omnibus, six men wearing red MDC-T t-shirts and berets approached me and helped me carry the luggage. I thought they were sincerely helping me so I allowed them to carry the luggage, which they placed a few metres from the bus stop."
He said after some time the six approached him again and accused him of insulting them.
"I did not talk to these people but they approached me and started accusing me of proposing love to their sister and insulting them. When I asked them what they were talking about, two of them started punching me. In the process, I sustained injuries and they could have caused more harm had it not been for some villagers who were nearby, who quickly rescued me. The two continued to threaten me and I ran away, leaving my luggage and I lost my badge in the process," said Chief Dobola.
He said the villagers who witnessed the incident phoned the police in Binga and also arranged that he be taken to hospital for treatment.
"The villagers who rescued me made a report to the police in Binga and the two men were arrested on the same day. I also contacted and informed other chiefs about the incident. I received treatment at the hospital and I am feeling better now. I hope this will not happen again," said Chief Dobola.
"Today, the two men appeared in court and they have been remanded in custody to 1 August. I would like to thank the police for responding swiftly after they received the report and arrested the culprits. I hope this becomes a lesson to the MDC-T members that violence does not pay and it will not be tolerated anywhere in this country."
