Robert Mugabe is now a lame duck president and has no authority to make unilateral senior government appointments, the MDC-T Secretary General and Finance Minister Tendai Biti has said.

Minister Biti said this at a media briefing held at the party offices, Harvest House today to update the nation on the political developments taking place in the country ahead of the 31 July harmonised elections.

Mugabe on Monday made appointments of six High Court judges; Loice Matanda - Moyo, Erica Ndewere, Nokuthula Moyo, Owen Tagu, Emmy Tsunga and Esther Muremba.

"The appointment of the judges is illegal as the executive running the country is a caretaker one and Mugabe is a lame duck President who is there to ensure that the government remain operational and civil servants are paid their salaries," Minister Biti said.

"As the MDC-T, we will not accept Mugabe to make political decisions that favour only one political party. That is not acceptable," he said.

He said as a party, the MDC-T was concerned by the increase in the disregard of the country's laws by Zanu-PF, which was an indication that the 31 July elections will be "immoral and illegal".
