Marian Chombo, the former Zanu-PF member and Zvimba North constituency aspiring candidate has accused the police of selectively applying the law by failing to arrest some Zanu-PF supporters, who are tormenting her supporters ahead of the harmonised elections.
Marian, the estranged wife to Zanu-PF politburo member Ignatius Chombo, who is challenging her former husband for the parliamentary seat in Mashonaland West Province, told Radio VOP in an interview here that police were reluctant to arrest some suspects linked to Zanu-PF who allegedly abducted three of her supporters last week.
"They (police) are reluctant to arrest suspects because they believe it will tarnish Zanu-PF as a violent party but my supporters are living in fear from my rival who is a top Zanu-PF official and cabinet minister. No arrests have been made although my supporters are the victims," said Marian, who will contest as an independent candidate.
Marian, a Zanu-PF member until recently when she opted to contest as an independent candidate said three of her supporters including a woman were abducted last week.
One of the victims, Tawanda Kapfudze of Dalkenth farm near Banket said he was lucky to be alive after he was abducted by four men armed with a gun but escaped during the ordeal.
"It was during the night and I only escaped after I only managed to run away. I reported the case to the police but no action was ever taken. It is disheartening that my life is in danger and police are not assisting me either," said Kapfudze.
Another victim Themba Zulu of Red Acre farm escaped on Wednesday after he was ambushed by three suspects who wanted to abduct him.
However, there was no immediate response from the provincial police spokesperson son the phones
The Chombos are battling it out after Marian was "fired" when her name was dropped as a Zanu-PF party candidate following internal primary elections held in June.
