A 33-year-old injiva from Masvingo's Zaka District allegedly fatally assaulted his wife following a misunderstanding over her absence from home.
He hid the body in a river bank. The incident, which was confirmed by Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero, happened on 9 July but the man was arrested on Monday.
Insp Zhanero identified the woman as Mashidu Chishikau (19) of Tsigo Village under Chief Nhema. She has since been buried.
Insp Zhanero said the injiva, Chrispen Tiarwo was in police custody and would appear in court soon facing a charge of murder.
"Tiarwo was arrested after witnesses told the police that he was last seen in the company of his wife on the day she disappeared. He would appear in court facing a murder charge," said Insp Zhanero.
Sources said on the day in question, Tiarwo who works in South Africa arrived and found her wife not at home. This did not go down well with Tiarwo and he confronted her mother, Mrs Magret Tiarwo, over Chishikau's whereabouts but the mother professed ignorance.
"Tiarwo kept on looking for his wife until he located her at a female friend's homestead in the same village. The two had a heated argument and Tiarwo assaulted her with booted feet and open hands," said a source.
Tiarwo only stopped assaulting Chishaikau when other villagers intervened.
On their way home, Tiarwo who was seething with anger is said to have severely assaulted his wife until she lost consciousness.
"Chishikau later died before they reached home and on realising that he had killed his wife, he dragged the corpse and hid it along Mutozi River bank before he disappeared," he added.
The body was then discovered by a passerby, Mr Wellington Chireya, who rushed to report the matter at Zaka Police Station.
Police then launched a manhunt and Tiarwo was arrested after some days.
