Mugabe, Tsvangirai commended for peaceful polls

The COMESA observer mission to Zimbabwe's presidential elections has expressed satisfaction with the country's polls saying they were held in an atmosphere of peace and tranquil.
The mission also commended the recurrent efforts made by the president and MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai in calling for peaceful participation of citizens in the elections.
The mission said this had a significant role in ensuring that an atmosphere of tolerance was upheld.
Addressing journalists in the capital this morning, the leader of the Comesa observer mission, Ambassador Betuel Kiplagat urged the political leaders to continue with the same spirit of tolerance.
The observer mission deployed ten teams to all the countries ten provinces and reported that in over 90 per cent of the polling stations observed, they opened on time at seven in the morning and where they opened late polling started before seven thirty in the morning.
They also reported that voting materials were available in sufficient quantities at most polling stations visited during opening.
The observer mission commended the people of Zimbabwe for their peaceful conduct of the elections saying this will go a long way in consolidating democracy in the country.
The mission urged Zimbabweans to continue to maintain peace as counting continues and wait for the announcement of the final result.
The mission further urged all parties to pursue legally established channels to resolve any disputes that may arise in relation to the outcome of the elections.
