The Zimbabwe Republic Police says it has deployed adequate personnel on all major highways and residential areas to curb accidents during the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays while the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has intensified road awareness campaigns.
Most Zimbabweans will be taking advantage of the long weekend to travel to their rural homes or holiday destinations.
ZRP Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the increase in traffic during the holiday period usually results in an upsurge in road traffic accidents mostly attributed to speeding and human error.
She said adequate police personnel have been deployed and warned the motoring public to observe road regulations and also consider the right of other road users.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba urged people to report any misconduct by commuter omnibus drivers on Harare number 703 631 and quote the registration number of the vehicle, time and place.
Meanwhile, the TSCZ says it has also intensified road awareness campaigns.
TSCZ Director of Operations, Research and Marketing Proctor Utete urged drivers not to overload or be influenced by passengers.
Last year, a total of 231 accidents were reported during the Heroes and Defence Forces holiday as compared to 351 road traffic accidents that were recorded during the same period in 2011.
However, 24 people were killed during the same period last year down from 34 that were killed during the 2011 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
