A Chitungwiza man will spend three years in jail after being convicted of striking his ailing sister with an axe on the head during a domestic dispute.

Godfrey Charura of St Mary's denied attempted murder charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza regional magistrate Ms Estere Chivasa but was last week found guilty after a lengthy trial. Ms Chivasa slapped Charura with four years in prison but set aside one year on condition of good behaviour.

In his defence, Charura had told the court that his sister Sarudzai Nyamadzawo (43), had slipped and hit her head against the floor.

But in her judgment Ms Chivasa rejected Charura's defence saying the State proved a strong case against him.

In sentencing him, Ms Chivasa took into consideration that Charura deserved a stiffer sentence.
