The Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo says the local government sector will maintain the post of ceremonial mayors in local authority as a cost cutting measure.
The councils that will be operating for the next five years will be run by non-executive mayors as the government continues to put in place cost cutting measures to reduce the financial burden on the ratepayers.
Dr Chombo said Zanu PF and the MDC-T agreed to scrap the post of executive mayors as it was clear that local authorities can function better when they are being run by town clerks employed on a professional basis.
"In the next councils, the government will maintain the post of non-executive mayors. This is cheaper and we will ensure that local authorities are run by professionals," he said.
The town clerks then used to enjoy sweeping powers.
The recommendation to have non-executive mayors is meant to reduce the financial burden of the ratepayers as the ceremonial mayors are not fully employed by councils.
