MATABELELAND South governor Angeline Masuku yesterday said the country's fallen heroes turned in their graves in the past years when people in the province voted against Zanu-PF.

She said President Robert Mugabe who won last month's presidential elections by 61%, was "sent by God".

Zanu-PF won in all parliamentary seats in Matabeleland South, a region that had over the years been dominated by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) formations.

Addressing a small crowd at the provincial Heroes' Acre in Gwanda before reading Mugabe's speech, Masuku hailed the people of Matabeleland South for rallying behind the Zanu-PF leader.

The event was snubbed by both formations of the MDC.

"I want to thank you the people of Matabeleland South for what you did. Heroes lying here were not happy in the past, but the happiness they feel today is the happiness they felt when we gained independence in 1980," Masuku said. "We have gained independence for the second time from those that wanted to steal it from us."

Masuku, however, said the struggle was not over as it was now time for Zanu-PF to fulfil the promises it made to the electorate during the campaign period if it was to win the next elections in 2018.

The governor went on to heap praise on Mugabe, saying his triumph in the polls was a clear sign that he is God sent, a sign critics said, she was clearly singing for her supper.

"Even when his enemies said false things about him God protected him and guided him to victory," Masuku said.

She thanked Mugabe for the food handouts dished to the people of the drought-prone region ahead of the polls.

Outgoing Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in his court challenge, has cited the doling out of food as part of Mugabe's vote-buying strategy which he said was prohibited under the Electoral Act.
