President Robert Mugabe has conferred the Zimbabwe Order of Merit Awards to 1254 defence forces officers, who have remained resolute in pursuit of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) mandate despite challenges faced by the organisation.

President Mugabe, who is also the Grand Master of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit, admitted the selected Zimbabwe National Army warrant officers class one and two to become members of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit, an honour that is awarded to members of the defence forces who would have distinguished themselves as principled and dedicated members.

The Minister of Defence, Emmerson Mnangagwa said the recipients of the awards have demonstrated unwavering commitment to duty and also actively participated in the Mozambique and DRC missions with unfailing devotion.

20 officers were on hand to receive the awards on behalf of the 1254 members who were selected to be worthy of the recognition.

Nine recipients were conferred with the Commander of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit, four were awarded the Officer of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit while seven received the member of the Zimbabwe Order of Merit awards.

Mnangagwa said besides the ZDF's primary mandate of safeguarding the country's independence, territorial integrity and peace, the defence forces are also undertaking community assistance programmes that are aimed at assisting the less privileged communities through construction or rehabilitation of schools, clinics, roads and bridges.
