UN Security Council urges action to combat piracy

New York - The UN Security Council is urging more action to combat the rise in piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea off Africa's west coast.
A presidential statement adopted on Wednesday expresses the council's deep concern at the threat the pirates pose to international navigation in the Gulf, security and economic development of regional states and the safety of seafarers.
The Security Council called for a comprehensive regional approach to combat piracy, including laws to criminalise such acts and to prosecute perpetrators and facilitators.
The council expressed deep concern at the number of incidents and level of violence of acts of piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea in the first half of 2013, when the International Maritime Bureau reported 31 incidents including four hijackings.
