A TEAM of about 13 police officers from Chipinge District last week recovered 96 head of cattle that were stolen from that district alone since last year.

Deputy Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector

Luxson Chananda, confirmed the recovery and said the team was tasked to make a follow-up of cattle that were stolen over a short period of time up to the month of July in Chipinge and parts of Chimanimani District.

He said information reached the police that the cattle were stolen by Bornface Ziwirenyika (44) of Matotote Village, Chief Mukanganwe in Bikita.A follow-up was made to Bikita where most of the cattle were recovered.

"Armed with this information, the squad went straight to him and discovered that he was in the process of buying a shop from Tsitsi Manyangadze. He had already given him five beasts as deposit.

"Our officers discovered that he had stolen more than those five beasts because Ziwirenyika had given the rest to his relatives for safekeeping. Follow-ups were made and 43 beasts were recovered," he said.

Asst Insp Chananda said an additional 53 beasts were recovered this week, bringing the total number to 96.

"So far, 70 of the 96 beasts have been positively identified by the owners in Birchenough and Nyanyadzi areas. The recovery of the stolen beasts helped us to clear stock theft cases dating back to last year. We are appealing for information that will lead to the arrest of suspects like Pedzisai Dzivakwi (60), Tendai Dzivakwi (27) both of Imbi Village, Chief Nyashanu in Buhera and Farai Matotote (40). The three are still at large.

"We will continue with our operations to clear all outstanding cases of stock theft in Manicaland," said Asst Insp Chananda. He called on all those who lost their cattle to approach the police to help them with identify the outstanding recovered cattle.
