Two gold panners assaulted their colleague to death after they had a verbal altercation over a cigarette in Murapamba Village under Chief Marange in Chimanimani.
The pair, who are brothers, Innocent and Saul Mukotorwa, were drinking illicit beer at Most Nyakani, homestead in Murapamba at around 9am.
During the binge, their colleague who is also a gold panner, Paul Musiteyi snatched a packet of cigarettes from Innocent's pocket and took one cigarette.
This did not go down well with Innocent and a fight ensued. During the commotion, Innocent was overpowered and Saul intervened to save his brother.
Innocent took advantage and picked an iron bar which he used to hit Paul once on the left side of the head after which he fell down and become unconscious. He later gained consciousness after an hour and the three left the homestead for a nearby hill where they were staying.
"On August 19, Musiteyi's condition deteriorated and this prompted Innocent and Saul to seek help from Paul Nyakuni, who assisted them to take Musiteyi to Chishingwi clinic," said assistant provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Muzondiwa Clean.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival, leading to the arrest of the two brothers.
The pair has since appeared before Mutare magistrate Noah Gwatidzo facing murder charges.
They were remanded in custody to September 4 and were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Shepherd Chawarika pro-secuted.
