Kumbirai Kangai declared national hero

The late Zanu PF Politburo member, Kumbirai Kangai who died on Saturday has been declared a national hero.
Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Rugare Gumbo told ZBC News on the sidelines of the burial of Retired Air Commodore Mike Karakadzai at the National Heroes Acre that the Politburo met briefly to deliberate on the hero status of the late Kangai.
He said the Politburo passed a unanimous decision to award Kangai national hero status, having considered his immense contribution to the liberation of the country and after independence.
Kangai will be buried on Saturday at the national shrine.
Kangai collapsed at his home and was rushed to Corporate 24 Medical Clinic where attempts to resuscitate him failed. He was 75.
He said the late Kangai had just been elected Senator for Buhera in the just ended harmonised elections.
Apart from being a Politburo member of Zanu PF, Kangai was the first Minister of Labour soon after independence in 1980.
Kangai served in several cabinet portfolios including that of the Ministry of Agriculture.
He also served as a member of parliament for Buhera South from 1980 to 2008.
Mourners are gathered at Number 25 Glen Forest in Harare.
He is survived by his wife Miriam and eight children.
