A Bikita headman, who is also a leader of a Johane Masowe apostolic sect, has appeared in court facing two counts of raping a woman he had offered a lift in his car at Nyika Growth Point last week.

Clemence Munyika (45) of Mpakwa village under Chief Mukanganwi last Friday appeared before Masvingo magistrate Mr Langton Ndokera facing two counts of rape after he allegedly stripped and raped the woman in his vehicle.

He was not asked to plead by Mr Ndokera who remanded him out of custody to September 5 on $100 bail.

Mr Ndokera ordered Munyika, who was represented by Mr Collins Maboke of Mwonzora and Associates, to report to Nyika Growth Point police every Friday between 6am and 6pm.

Allegations against the headman are that on August 18 this year at around 7pm he allegedly offered a lift to the woman at the growth point before driving his vehicle in the opposite direction and only stopped about 20 kilometres away near Chitsanga Primary School.

He then allegedly stripped the woman and raped her twice inside his vehicle after which he dropped the woman a few kilometres from her home.

The woman immediately reported the case to police leading to the headman's arrest.

In his defence, Munyika is arguing that he proposed love to the woman and that she had consented to have sex with him.

He is further arguing that charges against him are trumped up and being used by his rivals to eliminate him in the race to become the new Chief Mukanganwi.

Mr Joshua Mundondo appeared for the State.
