Losing MDC-T candidate takes Chief Charumbira to court

An MDC-T National Assembly losing candidate has taken Zimbabwe Chiefs' Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira to the High Court seeking to bar him from meddling in politics and threatening the opposition party's supporters in Masvingo.
Mr Takanayi Mureyi, who lost the Masvingo West seat to Zanu-PF's Ezira Ruvai in the July 31 election, blames his defeat on Chief Charumbira whom he accused of intimidating people to vote for Zanu-PF.
He has also filed a petition challenging the election and its outcome and he was among the 39 candidates whose US$10 000 security for costs fees were paid by MDC-T on Friday.
Mr Mureyi is challenging the election on the basis that the traditional leaders including Chief Charumbira were intimidating the voters among other grounds.
He contends that even after he filed the petition, Chief Charumbira had continued addressing rallies and denouncing MDC-T, which he says would seriously prejudice him in the event that his petition succeeds.
Mr Mureyi wants the court to interdict Chief Charumbira from coercing his subjects to attend political gatherings.
He also wants the chief barred from threatening his subjects with eviction and death if they vote for MDC-T.
The matter will be heard at 2.30pm today at the High Court.
Harare lawyer Mr Jonathan Samukange of Venturas and Samukange is representing Chief Charumbira while Musendekwa and Mtisi law firm are acting for Mr Mureyi.
