A 47-year-old man from Chivhu allegedly fatally struck his girlfriend to death following a misunderstanding over his proposal to marry her, police confirmed.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Thursday last week at about 6 pm.

He identified the woman as Kumbirai Mukaro (35) of Longwork, Setisiso in Gutu.

He said the man is in police custody and would appear in court soon facing a murder charge.

"I can confirm that police in Masvingo have arrested a man in connection with a case of murder involving him and his girlfriend. He is in our custody and will appear in court soon facing charges of murder," said Insp Zhanero.

According to sources, on the fateful day, Edmore Matajira of Manzvimbo Village under Chief Manyane in Chivhu travelled to Gutu to visit Mukaro, his long-time girlfriend with the intention of taking her to his aunt so that they could formalise their relationship.

"On arrival in Gutu he ordered his girlfriend to pack her clothes so that they could go together to Chivhu for marriage procedures to which she refused. Mukaro is said to have had initially agreed to marry Matajira," said the source.

The source said Mukaro refused to give in to Matajira's idea after which a misunderstanding ensued between the two.

"When Mukaro refused to pack her clothes, Matajira pleaded with his girlfriend but his pleas fell on deaf ears. This led to Matajira picking up a stone and fatally striking the woman on the head and he disappeared from the scene. Mukaro sustained a deep cut on the head and died on the spot," said the source.

A report was made to the police and a manhunt was launched leading to Matajira's arrest.

Insp Zhanero said police attended the scene and took the body to Gutu Mission Hospital for a post-mortem.
