A MUREHWA woman killed her four-year-old daughter by throwing her in a river citing ill-treatment by her parents.
She also intended to commit suicide.
Memory Mukuvisi of Marongedza Village under Chief Mangwende, threw her daughter Jennifer Chakanyuka, in a river arguing that her parents were ill-treating her and that she wanted to commit suicide after killing the innocent girl.
Acting Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident saying they had arrested Mukuvisi for murder and she was in custody assisting with investigations.
"We received a report following the death of Chakanyuka who was thrown in a river by Mukuvisi, who indicated that her parents were ill-treating her and that she wanted to commit suicide after killing her daughter," he said.
It is alleged that on August 23, Mukuvisi and Chakanyuka boarded a commuter omnibus at Murehwa Centre en-route to Uzumba, where she was visiting her grandparents.
The two disembarked from the commuter omnibus at around 1pm at Mutambwe bus stop and Mukuvisi decided to rest under a tree along a foot path until 8pm.
It is reported that Mukuvisi took Chakanyuka to Nyaitenga Bridge where she threw her in the river at the bridge.
Chakanyuka's body was discovered the following day floating in the river by Gift Masemera (43), who was passing by. A report was made at Mutoko Police Station, who attended the scene and arrested Mukuvisi.
Chakanyuka's body was retrieved from the river and taken to Mutoko Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
Asst Insp Mwanza appealed to members of the public to find peaceful ways of managing stress and misunderstandings to avoid such loss of life.
