TWENTY-FIVE people who reportedly stormed a police station in Mabvuku demanding the release of their four colleagues who had been arrested for breaking the land survey law, have appeared in court.
The 25 are Jacob Mavhunga, Gift Chingoza, July Paundi, Harmon Katiyo, Joel Pakamisa, Mick Musonza, Kudakwashe Maruza, Grayson Chari, Marvilous Murambahwenda, Prince Mushoriwa, Lucia Chapata, Miriam Chari, Fortunate Magunhu, Betty Chirenje and Temptation Mutari.
The others implicated are Nyasha Njanji, Abel Kachuta, Adam Muswe, Tonganai Musagadaga, Nyasha Shamu, Alice Nyemudzai, Rachael Machinga, Chaswaine Juma, Talent Makwena and Fortunate Chimanga.
They pleaded not guilty to participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace or bigotry when they appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma.
Ms Tshuma remanded them to September 12 on US$50 bail each coupled with stringent conditions.
Prosecutor Mr Tungamirai Chakurira alleges that on August 27 this year, a police assistant inspector identified as Kabanda arrested Blessing Mapfumo, Zvanyadza Kanyemba, Mosphere Mapfumo and Kenneth Mapfumo in Caledonia for contravening the Land Survey Act.
The indictment papers did not elaborate what the four had disregarded in the Land Survey Act.
It is alleged they were taken to Mabvuku Police Station where they were detained.
The 25 allegedly teamed up with intent to promote public violence before they followed to the police station, the prosecutor said.
The court also heard that the suspects gathered at a police car park within the police station and started demonstrating while shouting at police officers demanding that they release their colleagues.
The rowdy 25 were rounded up by the police while still at the scene of the crime, it is alleged.
Mr Chakurira argued that they had no right to act in the manner they did.
