The late liberation icon and Zanu PF Politburo member, Kumbirai Manyika Kangai has been laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

Earlier, the body of revolutionary council member was taken to Stodart Hall, in Mbare Saturday morning where the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, President Robert Mugabe led mourners in bidding farewell to the national hero.

Mbare residents woke up early and started lining up the streets leading to the hall well before the arrival of the body of Kangai.

Mbare Chimurenga Choir has clearly claimed the spot just outside the entrance where they belted out revolutionary songs, reflecting the critical role played by Kangai who was a member of the Dare Rechimurenga.

Youths could also not be outdone as they chanted slogans in praise of the national hero.

The waiting crowd sang and ululated when the gun carriage with the body of the national hero escorted by his widow Miriam and children and relatives arrived.

By then senior Zanu PF officials, senior government officials, Zanu PF Politburo members and outgoing Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Arthur Mutambara had started arriving for the proceedings.

Zanu PF National Chairman, Simon Khaya Moyo, Vice President Joice Mujuru and President Mugabe, then arrived and consoled the Kangai family before taking their seats.

A sombre mood engulfed the hall as President Mugabe paid his last respects followed by Vice President Mujuru, Zanu PF National Chairman Khaya Moyo, Professor Mutambara, Zanu PF Politburo members and senior Zanu PF officials, service chiefs, legislators, family, relatives.

Hundreds of Zimbabweans also joined in the procession to pay their final respects to the late gallant son of the soil.

From Stodart Hall, the funeral cortege began its final journey to the national shrine.
