Outgoing Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu broke down today as he shed tears while delivering a congratulatory message to the new Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda.

Mpofu was overcome with emotion as his Zanu-PF party took full control of Parliament. Legislators from the MDC-T attended the swearing-in ceremony, but boycotted the election of presiding officers in the National Assembly, while their colleagues in the Senate saw through both the processes.

Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku conducted the swearing-in for presiding officers for both Houses in terms of the new Constitution. Mudenda, will be deputised by Marble Chinomona, while former Cabinet Minister Chenhamo Chakezha Chimutengwende was elected deputy president of Senate.

All candidates were elected unopposed after the MDC-T did not field any candidate in the wake of the landslide election victory by Zanu-PF, which saw the party securing more than two thirds the number of seats. Clerk of Parliament Mr Austin Zvoma conducted the swearing-in for both Houses, with the MPs taking the oath in a batch of 10 per given time.

While MPs were congradulating themselves outside Parliament it was business as usual with many saying there was nothing to celebrate. MPs have always promised much but delivered very little. A seat to Parliament is now seen as a ticket onto the gravy train.
