A 30-year-old man from Hippo Valley Estate in Chiredzi allegedly stabbed to death a fellow reveller following a misunderstanding over an undisclosed issue while coming from a beer drink.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Sunday at about 9.30 pm.
He identified the deceased as Michael Nyika (29) of B14 Section 24.
Insp Zhanero said Nyika's body was taken to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. He said the suspect, Rangarirai Dowo whose address was not given is at large and police are looking for him.
"Dowo fled from the scene soon after committing the crime and is still at large. The long arm of the law will definitely catch up with him," said Insp Zhanero.
He said on the fateful day, Nyika was at Section 24 Beer Hall where they were drinking beer with Dowo and Mr Wonder Mapfukirei.
"At around 9pm, the trio left the beer hall for home. After walking for about 200m, Mr Mapfukirei is said to have left behind Dowo and Nyika as they were having a conversation that he thought was peaceful," he said.
Insp Zhanero said when Mr Mapfukirei was about to reach home, he realised that Nyika was now in front of him and running with Dowo in pursuit.
"Dowo caught up with Nyika," he said.
Mr Mapfukirei heard Dowo telling Nyika that he would prove that he was not clever.
"While still watching the two, Mr Mapfukirei heard Nyika screaming. He (Nyika) was saying Dowo had stabbed him and when Mr Mapfukirei moved closer, he realised that Nyika had been stabbed on the chest. He was lying in a pool of blood while groaning in agony. Nyika bled profusely from the stab wounds and died on the spot," said Insp Zhanero.
Dowo fled from the scene. A report was made to the police who attended the scene. Insp Zhanero advised members of the public against resorting to violence when they have differences.
