Former Chitungwiza Town Clerk Godfrey Tanyanyiwa has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of corruption and fraud.

Tanyanyiwa has been convicted on three counts of corruption and fraud and has been slapped with six years on the first count.

However, regional magistrate Hosea Mujaya suspended 18 months on condition that Tanyanyiwa will not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Magistrate Mujaya further suspended two more years on condition that Tanyanyiwa pays a restitution of US$80 000 to Chitungwiza Town Council.

On the second count, Tanyanyiwa was sentenced to one month in jail or an optional fine of US$300.

On the third count, Tanyanyiwa was sentenced to one year which will run concurrently with the first count.

Tanyanyiwa will serve an effective two and a half years in prison.

Tanyanyiwa is one of the high profile figures who has been prosecuted, convicted and sentenced on corruption charges.

The investigations of corruption charges by the anti-corruption commission on the Chitungwiza Town Council has seen a number of the council employees implicated in the case, however some have since been acquitted.

Tanyanyiwa was arrested in 2012 facing 50 counts of corruption and eight counts of fraud.

During the same year, he was fired by Chitungwiza Town Council following recommendations made by a disciplinary committee.
