A 33-year-old Wedza man was arrested recently, after he allegedly fatally assaulted his 28-year-old wife for failing to spread the bed.

Mashonaland East province acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Tendai Mwanza last week confirmed the arrest of Farai Makumbe, who is assisting police with investigations following the death of his wife, Gladys Mhere.

"I confirm that the police arrested Makumbe who is accused of murdering his wife after accusing her of not spreading the bed," said Mwanza.

"His wife Gladys Mhere died in a vegetable garden after being assaulted twice by Makumbe using a belt and a log on separate occasions. However, Makumbe said he discovered a bottle of poison beside his wife's body. Police are still investigating the issue."

Police said on August 27 2013, Makumbe returned home after being away for four days.

On arrival, he complained to his wife that the house was dirty and that the bed was not properly spread.

During that time, Mhere was plaiting Beauty Mwanza's hair.

When she left, Makumbe called his wife into the bedroom and assaulted her all over her body using a belt.

It is said that Mhere fled home and did not return.

The following day, Makumbe woke up and started looking for his wife, whom he found at Beauty's residence.

He started assaulting her again using a stick, prompting his wife to go back home where he further assaulted her till she died.

The accused however denied any responsibility for his wife's death and gave police his version of what happened.

Makumbe told police that while at home, Mhere proceeded to the vegetable garden where she drank poison. He said she then collapsed and became unconscious.

Makumbe said he found a bottle of poison by her side and he gave her a cup of fresh milk to induce vomiting but this was all in vain.

The accused claimed that he failed to take his wife to a hospital citing financial constraints.

Mhere passed on the same day and the matter was reported to the police.

Mwanza said people must seek amicable ways of solving disputes.

"We appeal to the public to desist from using violence as a way of solving problems to avoid situations like these," said Mwanza.
